Years ago when we signed up for Family Heritage's "Cancer Care plus" we thought we would never have to use it. Premium return every 25 years or at age 65 made it a no brainer for us. On my birthday in November of 2007 my wife's gynecologist found a tumor during her annual exam. We were referred to an oncologist who took a biopsy of the tumor. Originally all of the doctors thought it was a normal uterine cancer that could be treated with chemo and radiation, but when the biopsy results came back it was leukemia. Since my father and uncle died from leukemia we were terrified. We heard or understood very little of what the doctors said from that point because of the shock and disbelief.
This started 6 plus months of chemo treatments ending with a stem cell transplant in June of 2008. We will continue after care for a number of years including regular blood test and bone marrow biopsies.
Without Family Heritage's Cancer Care plus we would be in financial ruin. We have great medical insurance that covered almost all of the medical cost involved with this long journey. Cancer Care plus payments covered all of the lost wages incurred by my wife being on disability for more than six months, lodging while we stayed near the treatment center, and additional food expense associated with being away from home. Because of Family Heritage we did not have to borrow any money and were able to meet all of our financial obligations.
